January Resolution

Upon examination, the second Tuesday of the month in February is Valentine’s Day and while some may bemoan and say “So what?” It’s simply easier to start the 2012 BarCode Network event season in January. So mark your calendars for Tuesday, January 10^th at 4:30-7:00 PM at PT’s Gold on Buffalo & the 215 (same time and location as before) to launch the 2012 BarCode Network. You regulars can expect a reminder email before the blessed event. Currently open in Las Vegas are 13 individual Java Developer roles ranging from contract to hire to full-time & direct hire. Maybe all the awesome IT pros are happily employed & kudos to you (or them), but surely all you birds flock together, and you know a Java Developer at least open to new opportunities. Maybe you’re working someplace great, but your salary isn’t commensurate to your skills & expertise. While Nevada does have one of the highest unemployment rates, the IT market is starting to boom again (much of that number is concentrated in the construction industry, by the way), and solid companies want to invest in its most precious proprietary asset: the human resource, and specifically in this case, Java Developers.

If you have any of the following words on your resume, you need to contact Phoenix Staff immediately (702-566-3694): Mobile Java (Android, Blackberry, iPhone), J2EE, Hibernate & Spring. Maybe Java isn’t your cup of joe but you know someone with this or that flavor of Java. In that case, refer them over to us and if we’re able to set the stage for them to start a job, you earn $100 on their first day & another $200 on their 91st day. That’s a lot of lattes, or at least a down payment on a new iPad.

November BarCode Network Event

BarCode Network finished up its events for 2011 just this past Tuesday, Nov. 8th. Both regulars and some new faces came, and we enjoyed every one’s presence immensely! Congratulations to Judy T. on winning a $50 American Express gift card! Every participant who attended was given a ticket for each person who attended at their invitation, and the winner was drawn the following morning. Look for more cool giveaways and raffles in 2012.

Speaking of next year, we want to know what you are looking for in your BarCode Network. Do you seek a more structured quarterly event with a guest speaker such as a hiring manager or subject matter expert to discuss emerging technology trends in an enterprise environment? Maybe you simply enjoy the happy hour event every second Tuesday of the month and the casual networking environment. Better yet, maybe you have a suggestion on ways we can improve or features we can include. Please tell us!

Observations on October BarCode Network Event

The energy last Tuesday was incredible! Lots of different IT professionals across multiple areas of expertise attended and many brought guests which only added to the dynamic. If you attended, I hope you had the opportunity to make your way throughout the group and speak to as many pros as possible.

One discussion I was part of involved the topic of economic recovery specific to the Vegas IT market and the excitement many are feeling going into the last financial quarter of the year. Another half circle of people were talking about PMI (Project Management Institute) and additional up-and-coming networking events within that fantastic organization. I enjoyed listening to people talk about various projects they are involved in and how they’ve optimized use of their time to develop skill sets even in recent times of unemployment.

Thank you to those who attended–you made all the (positive) difference. One last hurrah is scheduled for 2011: Tuesday, November 8th, same place and same time (PT’s Gold on Buffalo & the 215 from 4:30-7:00). A special incentive to invite even more IT professionals will be shared in the next post. Those who are on the e-mailing list will get an early heads’ up.

The Network on Education & Opportunities

Hard to believe, but The BarCode Network’s third meeting is happening this week, Tuesday, October 11 at the same great spot over at PT’s Pub on Buffalo & the 215. As always, we seek insights, opinions and feedback from the network’s participants. So we ask: what are you looking to learn and gain from The BarCode Network meetings?

As a network, one of our the themes is education. Of course our economy is still recovering, and while I continue to have some people telling me that “jobs aren’t out there,” the open and available opportunities my clients are asking me to find the best people for reveal to me, that simply isn’t the case. A more accurate statement may be “the competition for the jobs out there is high.” So what’s a job-seeker to do? To borrow from the army, “be all you can be.” AKA: be professional, be informed & educated, research the company, ask smart questions, and follow up at every turn. While some people certainly have success applying for and getting jobs independently, having a good recruiter in your corner only helps you. All recruiters/recruiting agencies are not created equal, but that’s another blog topic altogether (in fact, you should check out Recruiting as a Service’s blog regarding that matter). A good recruiter can serve as a steady resource for constructive criticism, practice & encouragement, and if you choose especially wisely, that person will know the market in which you are trying to secure a role.

Opportunity is another theme of the network. What’s out there in the Vegas market? Currently, one of my major gaming manufacturing clients is trying to rebuild a developer team for the long-term, so there are openings for C#/.NET Developers, Mobile Build & Release Engineers & Mobile Java Software Engineers. Another gaming & hospitality client seeks a Sr. Web Developer & Web Developer, respectively, and a database developer. The financial industry is hiring, too: openings for PL/SQL Developers & System Engineers are in high demand. As a recruiter, I’m struggling to find solid Java Developers who are seeking direct hire or contract to hire opportunities who are flexible on salary or hourly rate. Another painpoint is finding MySQL DBAs and developers. What’s your skill set and what struggles do you face as you approach and pursue opportunities? There are opportunities here in Las Vegas. Who do you know or are you IT? You and your fellow IT pros come to The BarCode Network’s next meeting this Tuesday, October 11 at 4:30 PM-7:00 PM at PT’s on Buffalo & the 215. We definitely have lots to talk about, and you can enjoy a refreshing after-work beverage.
